pumping in Rs 32 crore over 10 years towards flamingo mitigation efforts (Source: Express photo by Javed Raja/File) Top News AS THE Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) prepares to begin work on the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) received the first installment of Rs 332 crore on Tuesday for mitigation efforts for flamingos and other migratory birds to offset the negative impact of the MTHL construction The Society was appointed earlier this year to monitor the impact of the construction of MTHL on flamingos and other water birds in the area BNHS proposes to use the first installment of the funds for creating a comprehensive baseline data across the eastern seafront that stretches from Mumbai to Uran in Navi Mumbai This will help them monitor the impact of the construction on the birds and then mitigate it official said Beginning next week a team of 30 people will be working towards creating this data working on 15 to 20 key flamingo and migratory bird sites Officials tout this to be the most comprehensive data on the subject prepared so far “We already have prior data but this will be most comprehensive data on the subject and will be prepared over a period of one year” Dr Deepak Apte BNHS Director told The Indian Express “This will be the first time we will be taking data from different sites at the same time We have never taken simultaneous data across seascape before This will help understand a whole range of topics concerning species-wise bird population movement pattern of migratory birds and use of entire seascape by these birds It will also help identify sites where restoration can be done” added Apte On the issue of the project affecting the habitat of the water birds Apte said “The construction will definitely take away some of their habitats so we have to see how best we can mitigate it and the key will be to provide them a safe habitat” he added “We will be monitoring the effect of construction work in the next decade” he further added MMRDA will be pumping in Rs 32 crore over 10 years towards flamingo mitigation efforts “We also propose to use the funds to import Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTT) They are satellite transmitters that will help us to understand the migration pattern of these birds We will be seeking permission from the Government of India to import them” Apte said The funds will be provided to BNHS through the government’s Mangrove Foundation as they have been appointed to monitor the Society’s work towards flamingo mitigation The MMRDA proposes to begin construction of the 22-km Sewri-Nhava Sheva sea-link by the end of this year and has received permission from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to work through the night 7:20 pm England picked four wickets on day 1 of second Ashes Test (Source: Reuters) Related News England captain Joe Root was no doubt mindful of recent history at Adelaide Oval when he sent Australia in to bat on winning the toss in the second Ashes Test on Saturday In the two previous day-night Tests the visiting team won the toss – New Zealand in 2015 and South Africa last year – decided to bat and eventually succumbed to defeat against Australia So one could hardly blame Root for opting for a different path but that will not stop the Sunday morning quarterbacks from second-guessing his decision which somewhat backfired when his opening bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad wasted the new ball though the day was not a complete disaster with Australia 209 for four wickets at stumps England’s Test debutant Craig Overton who was not used early but later in the day bowled Australian captain Steve Smith for 40 acknowledged the early going was a tough slog for the visitors “Overcast skies a bit of moisture around” he said when asked the thought process behind sending Australia in “Obviously the first session didn’t go to plan but … they’re not too far ahead of the game” Australian number three Usman Khawaja was not surprised by Root’s decision “I had a feeling they might bowl first” Khawaja said after making 53 “It was overcast day one pink ball their bowlers do thrive in these conditions but at end of the day whatever you do first you have to do it well “I think we’re pretty happy with four to 200 at the end of the day” Anderson and Broad posed few problems for Australian opening batsmen David Warner and Cameron Bancroft early on With 899 Test wickets between them they rarely looked like making it 900 as they sent down too many short deliveries with the pink ball which passed through harmlessly to the wicketkeeper during the early stages Broad lasted just three overs in his first spell before being replaced by Chris Woakes It was a far cry from the second Adelaide Test seven years ago when England reduced Australia to three wickets for two en route to a decisive victory Anderson collected the prized scalps of Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke back then taking 4-51 in the first innings It was a different story on Saturday but by day’s end Root could surely defend his decision to bowl Cricinfo last year calculated that since 2000 the side
