Farewell Captain

first_imgHorace Burrell…had positive impact on Gardener’s football career By Kathy BarrettJamaicans and the regional football fraternity are mourning the death of long-time president of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), Captain Horace Burrell.Burrell, 67, died in Maryland at the John Hopkins Cancer Treatment Centre on Tuesday, June 6. He was stricken during last year’s Gold Cup in the United States and had been ailing since.Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness described the death of the national sporting icon, businessman and philanthropist as a loss to many communities throughout the island, leaving a significant gap in the national football program.Opposition Leader, Dr. Peter Phillips described Burrell as a visionary and an inspiration to many.Glowing tributes for Burrrell also came from former Prime Ministers – Portia Simpson Miller and P.J. Patterson.Simpson Miller said Burrell’s place is cemented in the region’s sporting history as he was the leading force in taking the Reggae Boyz to the 1998 World Cup in France. “Jamaica, Football and the sporting fraternity have lost a giant and I have lost a friend… Walk good my dear Captain! May your soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon you,” Simpson Miller added.Patterson described Burrell as a “big figure” who won’t be easy to replace. “We have suffered a monumental loss. He was a big figure, but I am sure he would want us to continue on the journey. He would want to reap the eternal rest which he deserves. I personally can attest to the epic quality of his contribution to the development of Jamaica. ….. When he became president of the JFF he had a very clear mission and that was to take us to the World Cup Finals in France. He said to me ‘prime minister, I have one clear ambition – I want the Jamaica football team to be present in France’ and I said to him what can I do to assist in that process and he said I want a coach from Brazil.”After his election as JFF president in 1994, Burrell was instrumental in leading the Reggae Boyz to the 1998 World Cup in France, making Jamaica the first English-speaking Caribbean country to qualify for the FIFA showpiece. He lost the JFF presidency to Crenston Boxhill in 2003, but regained the position four years later.Burrell was also a well-known entrepreneur, being the CEO of the popular Captain’s Bakery and Grill and, also Captain’s Aviation Services.Captain Burrell received Jamaica’s fourth highest national honour, the Commander of the Order of Distinction (CD) in 1998. He also received the highest award, Order of Merit, from the world football governing body, FIFA.last_img read more

Haitian Diplomat Urges Bahamas Government Not to Jail Haitians on Minor…

first_imgNASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – A Haitian diplomat is appealing to the Bahamas government not to imprison nationals from Haiti who have been convicted of minor immigration offences even as Nassau continued the programme of deporting illegal immigrants, including Haitians, last weekend.Haitian Chargé d’Affaires Dorval Darlier said he had held talks with Attorney General Carl Bethel on the issue.“We discussed a lot of things. I think that the first point of view is that some people are in Fox Hill (prison for minor things like the immigration matter. I know that The Bahamas is a country of law, but sometimes you have to see it like the humanitarian way because…there isn’t a major crime,” Darlier told the Nassau Guardian newspaper. He said that instead of sending to jail, illegal Haitian migrants=, they should be sent to the detention center “and be repatriated to Haiti,” adding “they don’t have to spend time in Fox Hill.”He said it was harsh to send Haitians to prison for petty offences, adding that it is an expensive undertaking to keep Haitians in prisons.“If you keep someone in jail, you are to take care of them. You are to feed [them]. I think it’s [better] for the government to just send them back. It’s not a big deal. It’s not a big crime. Just ship them back, send them back to Haiti. This is one of the main concerns that we were discussing.”Last week, the Bahamas government defended its decision to deport illegal migrants, mainly Haitian nationals, following the passage of the Category 5 storm on September 1 that killed an estimated 60 people and left millions of dollars in damage on the Abaco Island and Grand Bahama. The Geneva-based Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called on the Hubert Minnis administration to halt the deportations, but Nassau responded by saying “it is unfortunate sometimes that international organizations – with all respect – apply standards to little countries like The Bahamas that they do not enforce in their own countries.“The government of The Bahamas wishes to assure that there was adherence to all due process; and the requisite procedures for proper documentation via captured biometrics were followed to determine every individual’s constitutional right to reside lawfully in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. It said all individuals found in violation of the Immigration Act were “lawfully removed” from The Bahamas “in accordance with the requisite court orders”.Earlier this month, Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans, said she was prepared to adopt a harsher line of action in dealing with illegal immigrants after indicating that fines do not seem to be a deterrent. The magistrate sentenced several undocumented migrants to prison for immigration offences, including five Haitian men who were sentenced to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services for illegally entering the country.Meanwhile, 24 people including 17 Haitians, were repatriated last Saturday. The Department of Immigration said that six women were among those deported to Port Au Prince and that two boys had been transferred from the department’s “safe house” to the Children’s Emergency hostel after their mother was convicted in court of charges of illegal landing and sent to prison for two months.last_img read more

Bayern Fail To Secure League Summit After Wolfsburg Draw

first_imgGerman champions Bayern Munich missed out on the chance to go top in the league after they lost a two-goal lead to play a 2-2 draw with visitors VFL Wolfsburg at the Allianz Arena.Robert Lewandowski gave the home side the lead from the spot in the 33rd minute to make it 11 goals in 9 games this season before flying Dutch winger Arjen Robben added a second goal from a deflected strike two minutes from the break.Wolfsburg improved after the interval and eventually found a route back into the contest in the former of stand-in Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich who fumbled Maximiliano Arnold’s 25-yard freekick into the net. Daniel Didavi then equalised for the away team to give the former league champions a priceless point. The point takes VFL Wolfsburg from 13th to 11th with 6 points while Bayern Munich stay in 2nd spot with 13 points thus handing leaders Borussia Dortmund the chance to go three points clear with a victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday evening.Relatedlast_img read more

The FA cuts Ladbrokes partnership, stating no more to gambling relationships

first_img StumbleUpon Share The English Football Association (FA) has confirmed that it has ended its ‘official betting partnership’ with Ladbrokes, just one year into its four-year contract (reported to be worth £4 million per year).Following an internal management review, FA governance has deemed the sponsorship to be inappropriate as the body has to act as supervisor for the sport’s integrity and its player behaviour. As English football’s ruling body, the FA deems it strictly illegal for its syndicated professional footballers, coaches, team management and associated staff members to wager on any football matches.Last April, The FA banned Burnley midfielder Joey Barton for 18-months after admitting to charges in relation to betting. At the time, the Barton (34) stated that he was ‘addicted to gambling’ having placed 1,260 bets on football matches between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016. Barton further stated that the ban ‘was excessive’ and that it had effectively ended his professional career in football.“I have fought addiction to gambling and provided the FA with a medical report about my problem – I’m disappointed it wasn’t taken into proper consideration,” Barton addedUK news sources report that FA management triggered a review, following the high profile cases of Joey Barton and non-league Sutton United’s FA Cup 5th Round draw against Arsenal, which had brought the game into disrepute following the Wayne Shaw ‘Piegate’ incident.Greg Clarke – The FA ChairmanFA Chairman Greg Clarke is reported to be the key decision maker, in wanting to distance the ruling body away from bookmaker marketing and promotions. Clarke detailed to FA governance that the body’s position was ‘incompatible’ with enforcing anti-gambling rules, through its association with a well-known UK bookmaker. On Thursday, FA Chief Executive Martin Glenn said: ‘We would like to thank Ladbrokes for both being a valued partner over the last year and for their professionalism and understanding about our change of policy around gambling.’Responding to the FA actions, Ladbrokes CEO Jim Mullen accepted the decision taken by the governing body, further detailing that the firm would continue to advise the FA on matters of sports integrity.“The company would continue to work with the FA to ensure the integrity and trust of the sport is maintained for the fans of the game and the millions of customers who enjoy betting on it week in and week out”. Year in Review: Industry overcomes regulatory hurdles

first_imgShare As the year draws to a close and the betting sector prepares for an exciting 2019, SBC is looking back on 12 months that was filled with innovation, regulation and an abundance of landmark moments. The Gambling Commission released its biannual report for September 2018, detailing the latest statistics in the gambling industry from throughout the year. The report covered betting shops, bingo, gaming machine manufacturers, lotteries, and remote gambling. The aim of the report, which followed the one published in March 2018 was to give a brief overview of the gambling industry as a whole, and to analyse any changes in the sector throughout the year.2018 has been a year whereby more stringent regulations have been imposed on both online and land-based operators. Legislation regarding advertising for betting operators, the announced changes to Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) and changes to Remote Gaming duty have all rocked the betting industry during the last 12 months. The report announced that despite the changes, the Great Britain gambling industry continues to thrive, with the gross gambling yield totalling £14.4 billion in the year April 2017-March 2018, a 4.2 per cent increase on the previous year. But as the GGY for the industry as a whole has increased, operators have come under fire from government officials as they announced that the maximum stakes placed at FOBTs would be cut from £100 to £2. The move aims to ensure social responsibility while also maintaining contribution to the economy. As a result of the announcement, betting operators were forced to implement cut-back measures to mitigate the impact of the changes that are set to be introduced in April 2019. 151 high street betting shops have been closed, and there has been a drop of 0.5 per cent in the number of gaming machines between March and September this year. Operators such as ARC announced their prediction that 1,000 stores will close as a result of FOBT changes, meanwhile independent betting stores also suffered in 2018, as 25 operators were forced to shut-up shop. A spokesperson for the Association for British Bookmakers stated that: “Recent announcements by major operators reveal the true impact of this decision, that thousands of betting shops will close and there will be thousands of job losses. Betting shops are now focused on the future of their staff, customers and suppliers.”Conversely, employment figures within the industry have continued to rise, with 107,940 employees working within the UK gambling industry, an increase of 0.6% from March 2017. The casino industry enjoyed growth, albeit small, as two more casinos were licensed to open since last year. While there has been a 2.5 per cent decrease in casino attendance, there has been an increase in the number of people playing casino games online, having generated revenues of £171.4 million as of September 2018. The remote gambling sector has significantly grown this year, seeing a 4.2 per cent increase in GGY since last year, now estimated at £14.4 billion. The sector now holds 37.1 per cent of the total industry, and is continuing to grow as more betting operators are seeking to develop mobile betting apps. The development in the mobile sector comes as the government has announced a crack-down on TV advertising in the industry.Operators have been restricted in showing advertisements promoting betting services during live sporting events, as well as for periods of time before and after the event. The decision to implement this has forced operators to diversify their marketing techniques, resulting in a wider range of mobile apps and use of push notifications. Bingo operators have suffered during the year, with 11 bingo halls closing down between March and September, now making the total number of premises 644. Unlike the non-remote betting sector, the majority of bingo halls are now owned by independent operators. Despite the closures, some bingo operators have enhanced their mobile and online presence to continue attracting audiences. Newly rebranded Buzzbingo.com launched its online portal this year, which will aim to offer an alternative to the traditional bingo hall. The shifts towards online bingo and online betting reflects the general retail behaviour in the UK as more customers are moving towards online shopping. The phenomenon is affecting a number of industries, and will continue to do so into 2019. Peter Woodfine, Vermantia: Finding the US retail “sweet spot” through modern SSBTs

first_img StumbleUpon Related Articles Wiraya and A GAME ABOVE: Partnering to produce full lifecycle potential July 1, 2020 Share Speaking ahead of Betting on Sports America, Peter Woodfine of Vermantia says better sports betting facilities that combine live pictures, fast and correct data, and modern self-service betting solutions are a massive opportunity for the country’s retail operators. SBC: What are you looking forward to at Betting on Sports America? PW: We’re looking forward to speaking with U.S. operators and their partners about their sportsbook facilities, whether that’s on the casino floor or via the platform provider that is helping with an in-venue mobile solution or wider online facility. It seems to us that there are great opportunities to provide their customers with live action, fast and appropriate data, and a convenient way to utilise both to have a bet. We’ve seen this is the sweet spot in retail sportsbook in Europe and Africa in recent years. I’m convinced operators can provide a more engaging user experience with this live data, engaging visuals, and round the clock live action. SBC: What unique opportunities do you see for U.S. casinos? PW: Whenever I’m in Vegas, I see sportszones in casinos that have wall to wall sport on the TVs above drinkers and diners. There are clearly sports betting facilities in these places but sat in front of most on the tables and embedded in the bar tops are video poker machines… Why, would be my question! For my money, these could be replaced by the next generation of self-service betting terminals, such as our V-POS and FLAVOR solutions – which place a myriad of betting opportunities right under the nose of customers. These can be cashless or voucher-based for later cash collection, depending on what suits. We can also add live-streamed picture and data to the over-head product mix from round-the-clock horse and greyhound racing. This is high quality and from a wide variety of countries, providing highly engaging content. It will offer both a new competitive edge to casino operators, as well as the ability to provide a completely new type of entertainment and betting experience.SBC: Do you think U.S. bettors will be receptive to this type of content? PW: Without a doubt. Land-based casino customers are obviously used to machine-based wagering so there is nothing to frighten them with the technology. But secondly, greyhound racing in particular is very similar to the spin-and-win wagering that is part and parcel of any casino. It is not dissimilar to virtual games in that respect. People enjoy having a bet and want to know soon after if they’ve won. You don’t need to have studied the form in detail to enjoy the live action that comes thick and fast. Thanks to the rights deals we have with leading course and track owners around the world this content can be guaranteed at any time of the day and night. We know that customers thrive on live action and the better the quality of pictures and data that you can provide them with the more engaged they will be – and this is exactly what we can deliver. SBC: How would this dovetail with the other betting and gaming opportunities in a multi-vertical venue?PW: I think this sits with the payment solutions that come with SSBTs. Not only are our FLAVOR and V-POS solutions bundled with premium content, from racing and sports to U.S. customised virtual and numeric games – there is no reason why there shouldn’t also be cross-platform functionality to go with it. Many U.S. casinos have reward schemes, of course. Our cardless payment solutions can include free spins for slot machines, free bets, or food and drink to look after loyal customers. This maintains customer interest, ensuring they are only moments away from further engagement with a product or service on the premises. Most of the gambling segments benefited from the overall positive development in the betting segment, however, there are still regulatory challenges to overcome.“The biggest challenge for mybet will be to be able to scale their operations fast.
