Dr Som Tugnait, World Bench-Press Champion, New DelhiBody Weight TrainingUse your own body weight to increase your muscle enduranceWhen you use your own body weight to exercise, your muscle endurance increases. How? While doing body weight exercises, the oxygen utilisation capacity of your fast twitch muscle fibres increases, thus increasing your muscle endurance. Fast twitch muscle fibres are those that produce energy without oxygen (anaerobically). Increased muscular endurance enables you to perform tasks that involve lifting light weights for longer. In this form of exercise, your body weight acts as the main resistance. The intensity is increased by decreasing the leverage. Here, the limbs are used as leverage, which, when flexed or contracted, are shortened, increasing the intensity. But remember, if your aim is to increase muscular strength, body weight training is not the ideal regime for you. This is because the weight remains constant in body weight training. You can only increase the endurance by increasing the reps. The most common body weight exercises include push ups, pull ups, squats and lunges. While push ups work on your pectoral and chest muscles, pull ups help build your lats and upper back. Squats and lunges, on the other hand, work on the quads and hamstrings.Vinata Shetty, Reebok-certified Trainer, MumbaiMetabolic TrainingBurn calories even while you are not working outSignificant post-exercise calorie burn is ensured by a metabolic rate that remains elevated hours after the workout. This is what you achieve when you start a metabolic training session. This is a fitness routine that incorporates short bursts (not more than 10-15 minutes) of extremely high-intensity workouts with a little rest in between. Since the intensity of these exercises is very high, the body’s oxygen consumption remains heightened for long after the exercise, resulting in an elevated post-workout metabolic rate. Following a session of metabolic training your body is in this state of increased metabolic rate for about 48-72 hours as it needs that much time to return to its pre-exercise state. So you will end up burning calories for a long time after the workout too.advertisementIn case of cardio and normal strength training workouts, the post-exercise calorie burn lasts for a few hours or, maximum one day. The difference is made by the intensity and the number of muscle groups used. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning showed that metabolic training has up to 10 times greater fat loss effects when compared to either aerobic exercise or weight training alone.Studies in The Journal of Medicine and Science in Sport, and The European Journal of Physiology have also supported this view.In fact, some studies claim that metabolic training has as much as a 50% increase in the use of fat as a fuel source during exercise. A metabolic training routine includes workouts like burpees, squat jumps, squat thrust, plyometric lunges with an overhead press, etc. These exercises give you a full body workout while increasing your strength without the help of weights. They also challenge your agility and co-ordination.Nisha Varma, Reebok-certified Master Trainer, New DelhiBalance TrainingKeep yourself injury-free by improving your balance Maintaining balance means having the centre of your mass within your base of support-with your trunk aligned over your feet. A proper balance prevents sudden falls by developing quick reflexes.Balance training involves holding the body steady on one leg or on an unstable surface with one’s core strength while performing different exercises. The balancing postures can be dynamic-involving movement or static-without movement. Dynamic balance training involves maintaining one’s core stability while the limbs or trunk may move to perform different exercises. One of my favourite dynamic balancing exercises is performing lunges with trunk rotation. In this move, your balance is challenged while changing position from forward to back or right to left.Tai chi, Pilates and yoga also improve your balance. While Tai chi is a dynamic balance exercise, Pilates and yoga are a combination of dynamic and static moves. Tai chi demands concentration, essential for balance while Pilates involve one-leg moves which challenge your balance.Vesna Jacob, Pilates Expert, New DelhiFunctional TrainingPrepare your body to do its daily chores more efficientlyWhat is general fitness? Some would like to define it as your ability to run several miles without getting a heart attack, some, on the other hand, would like to approach it from the perspective of daily functioning, say, for example, your ability to carry your grocery bags without aches and pains. In a nutshell, it’s all about sailing through the activities of your daily life. This is what functional training enables you to do.advertisementIt works on the principle of specificity and muscle function. Specificity refers to this phenomenon: the body responds and adapts specifically to the type and amount of demands it is placed under. To put it simply, you only improve the function for which your muscles have been trained. The best thing about functional training is that it trains the body to function as a unit rather than focussing on isolated muscle function like strength training does. So it includes all forms of exercise-endurance, strength, balance and flexibility-to primarily strengthen the core muscles and stabilise the spine, shoulder and neck muscles.According to research in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, those enrolled in a functional training programme had 58% greater increase in strength over those in the fixed-form group (those who performed only one form of exercise, for example, either strength training or cardio).Functional training has its roots in rehabilitation therapy. In the process of finding out ways to help people with functional disabilities through special exercises, therapists have come up with the functional approach of training. This fitness routine includes Bosu-based exercise, stability ball exercises, different variations of plank, etc. You should always do functional training under the guidance of a qualified professional.Radha Krishnaswamy, Reebok-certified Trainer, MumbaiRN TrainingTeach your muscles to follow correct movement patternsThe movement pattern of your muscles may go wrong for various reasons. It could be due to a range of reasons, from injuries to poor motor learning. For example, while moving the hand up overhead, the shoulder joint should be used. But due to an injury or poor motor learning of the muscle, you may start straining the neck to move up your hand. So now, you need to learn again and start using the right muscle for the right movement. This is where Reactive Neuro-muscular Training (RNT) enters the picture. This training programme teaches the right movement pattern to your muscles by stretching the tight muscles and strengthening the weak muscles. Basically it trains the brain and the nervous system to recognise and implement the corrected movement patterns. However, your efficiency will not improve if the practice is not done in the correct form. All RNT moves are performed at 30 % intensity of your capacity with a repetition range of 8-10. My favourite RNT exercises: 1) reach, roll and lift 2) spinal rotation with flexion 3) supine hip lift. While the first addresses shoulder immobility, the second and third address hip instability.
A 12-member delegation of sports bosses, led by the acting president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Vijay Kumar Malhotra, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday and sought his intervention to prevent the implementation of the National Sports Development Bill. While there has been a huge uproar over the bill for more than a year, the prime minister has little idea about the whole issue which has led to a standoff between the sports bodies of the country and the government. But IOA chief Malhotra, who was accompanied by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla, was optimistic about the outcome of the meeting and said Singh was sympathetic to their concerns.”The bill is illegal and unconstitutional and we have informed the prime minister about how the bill aims to centralise all the powers in the sports ministry,” Malhotra said soon after the 25-minute long meeting.”At this point of time, the prime minister doesn’t know much about the bill but he said that he will discuss the matter with the sports ministry,” Malhotra added.Besides Malhotra and Shukla, Jagdish Tytler, Anurag Thakur, Tarlochan Singh, RK Anand, Abhay Chautala and Avtar Singh Sethi were among those who represented the IOA and national sports federations. Two of the most contentious clauses in the bill are those which put a cap on the age and tenures of office- bearers of the federations. However, Malhotra made it clear that it wasn’t just a couple of clauses that are flawed. “Under the garb of good governance, the ministry wants to restrict the role of federations and the IOA. We are not against good governance and transparency and all the federations are ready to get their accounts audited.advertisement”Sports federations are autonomous bodies. Government’s interference would affect the performance of the athletes because if there’s a change in the government, the new regime might have its own preferences.”Tytler, who heads the Judo Federation of India, said the delegation also informed the prime minister about International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) stand on the issue. “We also informed him what the IOC feels and the repercussions. We cited the example of Kuwait, whose Olympic body was disbanded after the country’s government interfered in its functioning,” said Tytler. However, everyone is wondering what will happen if the bill is tabled in Parliament.”The Olympic qualifiers are already underway and there are a lot of other qualifiers to come. So it wouldn’t be appropriate to table the bill. We have informed the prime minister about that as well,” said Malhotra.Last month, BCCI officials had met the prime minister regarding the same issue as the sports ministry wants to take the cricket body in its ambit through the bill.”We are an independent body and we don’t take any grants from the government. Our accounts are audited regularly,” said Shukla. He asserted that neither BCCI nor the other federations would accept any interference.”Tomorrow they would interference in the selection matters also.We are clear, no government control is acceptable, we are capable to run our respective sports bodies,” he stressed.
It’s hard to believe that Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar used to refer to each other as brothers. But a fierce “sibling rivalry” has dominated Bihar politics in the past two decades. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief was a “monarch” for 15 years – since taking over as CM in March 1990 till his party was ousted by Nitish in November 2005. Nitish, close to Lalu in his early years, broke away in 1994 to float the Samata Party with George Fernandes.Staunch supporters of socialist ideology, Lalu and Nitish were students of Patna University when they were jailed under MISA. Lalu tasted electoral success by becoming a Lok Sabha MP in 1977, but Nitish had to wait till 1985 for his maiden victory as an MLA. In the first three years of Lalu’s reign, Nitish was part of his inner circle but chose to follow a different path when Lalu started marginalising other leaders of the erstwhile Janata Dal who had the potential to upstage him.Nitish was among the first to leave and turned into Lalu’s bitter critic in later years. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.

On June 29, a district court in,Naked on a bed with the camera zooming in on her genitals. Over 20,000 search queries have cropped up on Google in a day for the 29-second clip of Asian Games relay gold medallist Pinki Pramanik undergoing a gender test on July 2. On June 29, a district court in Barasat rejected her bail application and directed submission of Pinki’s chromosome for a test in Hyderabad or Bangalore. Once hailed as ‘Purulia’s Pride’ for her sporting achievements and campaign against social evils, the 27-year-old relay runner now sits inside Kolkata’s Dum Dum Jail awaiting the court’s judgment on charges of rape and gender falsification.”When the courts have not yet given the verdict, how can individuals condemn her? Pinki was a simple girl. I have seen her since her school days. Sports was her life. This entire ordeal has been a nightmare for her parents and a tragedy for the young girl. The law guarantees people a level of respect which has been disregarded,” says former Purulia MLA Nishikanta Mehta of Forward Bloc.Pinki was arrested on June 14 for allegedly raping her roommate Anamika Acharya. They lived together at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Hostel in Kolkata. Assumed to be a man by the police, Pramanik has not been allowed to avail of a woman’s cell and women police escorts. She was forced to undergo non-consensual gender tests on June 14 and subjected to abusive handling by male policemen. The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) has directed the home, health and police departments to inquire into the alleged ‘inhuman torture’ of Pinki. “A complaint has been submitted alleging inhuman torture both in jail and police custody,” WBHRC Chairman Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly said in a letter to the three departments on July 3.advertisementDr Laila Das, who has been the scientific officer of sports medicine at SAI, Kolkata, for 23 years, says the issue needs to be handled with care. “No doctor or hospital can conduct such a test without the consent of the patient. Second, to broadcast a person undergoing any sort of testing should be a punishable offence. And last, one must remember that we are dealing with a human being,” says Das.While tests for general fitness and health are performed regularly, gender testing is not part of the medical agenda at the sports authority. “Gender is usually determined through chromosome and hormonal tests. It is an extremely sensitive and confidential procedure. You are questioning someone’s identity and sense of self,” explains Tamal Kanti Ghosh, medical supervisor at SSKM Hospital, where Pramanik was tested.Pramanik comes from a tribal family based in the village of Tilakdi, 400 km from Kolkata. Despite the public humiliation, Pinki’s neighbours swear by her character. “Everyone in this area has a lot of respect for her and her family. We are poor people. We don’t understand many medical terms and legal procedures. I can imagine how confused her parents must be. She was known to be a girl from birth. How is any of this her fault?” says Shridharan Tutu, 45, a labourer from Tilakdi. The star athlete has had a rocky career with previous allegations of illegal gun possession and minor cases of theft during her stay at the SAI Hostel, Kolkata, in 2004. All previous charges-one for gun possession and two charges of theft-were eventually dropped. But the present scandal threatens to tarnish her sporting career beyond repair.A similar case of footballer Bandana Pal had come up in 1999. Pal, who played for the West Bengal’s women’s football team, was found to be a man. The issue came to light when Pal was not included in the team for the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. No formal charges were ever pressed against her. After six months of public humiliation and outcry, she gave up her career and reportedly fled to Nepal. The treatment meted out to Pramanik has attracted criticism from the sporting fraternity as well. “It’s a shame. I feel sad for Pinki who has earned laurels for the country. It’s a case of sexual harassment,” says two-time Olympian Saraswati Saha-Dey, who won the 200m gold at the Busan Asian Games. “She may be accused of a particular crime, but why is she being subjected to this harassment?” asks Arjuna awardee Shanti Mullick. Is there a viable solution? “As far as medical controversies go, what we need is a transparent tracking system. From the day an athlete joins, a unique identification number should be generated. A complete age, sex, health and background check-up should be registered on the number. Regular tests should also be conducted. This will deter any sort of foul play and will also spare candidates from scandals at a later stage in life,” says Subrata Dutta, vice-president, Indian Football Association. To have reached the pinnacle of your career and have it jeopardised is painful, he says. Ask Pinki Pramanik.advertisement
